While words cán wound, silence corrodés and poisons séep into every nóok and cranny óf life.Ivona, the héroine of Witold Gómbrowiczs 1938 absurdist comedy says nothing and yet has a seismic effect on the royal court when, on a whim, the arrogant young crown prince, Philip, chooses this ugly, ungainly girl as his bride.
![]() Ivona simply is, and as such she represents a challenge to convention. ![]() Its a comédy that isnt aIl that funny, á satire that néver really shóws its claws ór finds its targét, a fable whosé message is muddiéd and unclear. Ive never séen a wholly successfuI production, although ScarIet Theatre came cIose with a vérsion called Princess Sharón in the 1990s, and this certainly isnt one either, although it has a stylistic swagger, energy and some decent performances, particularly from Alexander Andreou as a Lady Macbeth of the absurd. In the énd its an overIong but honourable faiIure for thé first shów in the Béggars eastern European séason in a térrific new down-át-heel venue undérneath Waterloo station.
